In passing comment on the outcome of this year?s Codex Alimentarius meeting in Montreal in relation to the ?Guidelines for the production, processing and labelling of organically produced foods? the BEO is concerning itself with three issues:

Proposal Infant food
BEO has made a proposal to make it possible to produce organic infant baby-formulae.

Proposal Nitrate
BEO has send a proposal for the use of nitrate in the next 4 years.

EU Action Plan Organic
BEO is in general positive towards the EU Action Plan for Organic Food and Agriculture, but puts some serious questions about the possibilities to get the 21 Action Points serious into practice.

Harmonisation of pesticide residues
Recent problems with contaminations of pesticide residues found in organic products, has caused a firm discussion in different EU countries how to deal with pesticide residues.
Recent cases with residue contaminations show furthermore that the procedures and results by analysing labs can differ strongly.

Development criteria for organic processing
These criteria apply to the evaluation of food additives and food processing aids. Substances used for technical, sensory and dietary purposes are subject to these criteria. The criteria may also apply to substances in contact with food.
The following aspects and criteria should be used to evaluate additives and processing aids in organic food products.

Guidance for request of authorisation of food additives
The opjective of this document is to give the applicat of new substances for annex VI of the Eu Reg. 2092/91 guidance for the presentation of a dossier on his subject. The formalisation of that document is a important basis for an efficient autorisation process. This document can also be the basis for further expert evaluation.
